中国古代儒家所提倡的一种道德实践的原则和处世待人方法。最早提出"中庸"概念的是孔子。他在《论语·雍也》中说:"中庸之为德也,其至矣乎!民鲜久矣。"中庸之道要求人们按照一定的道德原则和规范,自觉地调节个人的思想感情和言论行动,使之不偏不颇,无过不及,严格保持在儒家规定的道德规范所许可的范围之内。中庸之道承认一些道德观念的相互依存和相互联结,肯定道德行为应该适度,包含着一些合理因素。然而,它的保守方面是主要的。后来的封建地主阶级思想家,把它解释为"不偏"、"不易",使之成为反对社会变革,维护旧秩序的工具。
