Proceeding with the egoism,lack of love and faith, malice and the dread of death,this essay analyses the relationship between the work and Schopenhauer\'s philosophy of life,and explains the universal values in America after the First World War,and it further shows and reconstructs the pessimistic meaning in human existence.

An attempt is made to analyse the contradiction from four aspects, namely belief and reality, predestination and blaspheme, fraternity and isolation as well as next life and this life, and to probe into the causes of the contradiction and the significance of its existence to the novel.
