姚鼐(1732~1815) 中国清代散文家。字姬传,一字梦偲,室名惜抱轩,人称惜抱先生。安徽桐城人。乾隆二十八年(1763)进士,曾任刑部郎中,充山东、湖南乡试考官,会试同考官。主持梅花、紫阳诸书院讲席共40年。姚鼐继承方苞、刘大櫆、姚范的古文之学,成为桐城派散文的集大成者。他继承方苞的义法论和刘大櫆的声气论,在理论上又有所发展。①提倡义理、考证、文章三者的合一以“相济”。②总结文章的“神理气味”、“格律声色”为八大要素。③概括文章的阳刚、阴柔两大类的风格,认为两者不能偏废。姚鼐的文章与欧阳修、曾巩相近,简洁清淡,纡徐要渺,雍容和易,一如其人,在桐城派诸家中,最富有情韵。实际上是偏于“阴柔”之美。他的议论文如《伍子胥论》、《李斯论》,序跋如《老子章义序》、《海愚诗抄序》,书信如《答翁学士书》,记传如《登泰山记》,都可看出他的风格。其缺点是气力不能健举,规模不够阔大,缺少现实内容。他的诗清拔淡远,尤工近体,但为文名所掩。著有《惜抱轩全集》88卷,所辑文总集《古文辞类纂》,世以为精当,流传很广。
