远洋渔业远离本国基地到别国专属经济区或公海从事海洋捕捞生产，以及为其产前、产中、产后配套服务的经济活动。远洋渔业按照作业渔场与基地港的关系来分，有大洋性远洋渔业、过洋性远洋渔业。大洋性远洋渔业又称深海渔业，作业区域离基地较远，一航次达半年以上，有大型拖网加工船、大型围网船、大洋性绳钓船和加工母船带捕捞渔船等。过洋性远洋渔业是以某种入渔协定或合作形式，在外国的专属经济区内从事捕捞作业，渔场靠近外国的补给港，生产活动类似于国内的近海渔业。远洋渔业的发展依靠渔船的大型化、渔捞设备的现代化，以及完备的冷冻冷藏设备和先进的助渔导航技术。远洋渔船一般都有冷冻、加工设备，能在海上长期作业，有的能加工鱼糜、鱼片和鱼粉，加工母船是附属捕捞渔船在渔场卸货和补充生产资料、生活资料的海上基地。捕捞渔船在以加工母船为中心的近海或作业。有些远洋渔船业船队配有冷冻船、运输船等辅助船舶。
