第一块蹄兔类化石是在19世纪中叶发现的。自此以后，化石逐渐增多，至今已建立了16属。早期蹄兔类具有完全的齿式，即I

、M；最后一个臼齿不退化。许多化石蹄兔比现生种大的多，如Titanoh
rax、Pliohrax和Postschizotherium等，其大小与现代马相近。蹄兔类在早第三纪已相当分化，在撒哈拉的始新世和埃及早渐新世地层中，它们在各类哺乳类化石中占很大比重，尤其在埃及早渐新世动物群中，属种繁多。新第三纪蹄兔类分布相当广泛，除非洲外，在希腊、法国南部、苏联的格鲁吉亚和中国北部都有发现，但种类相当贫乏。在更新世，其分布区域与现生种相近，但在中国华北地区的早更新世地层中仍有发现。童永生
