军用光学仪器主要指可见光波段范围内的普通光学仪器。它们在军事上应用最早,技术比较成熟,有扩大和延伸人的视觉、发现人眼看不清或看不见的目标、测定目标的位置和对目标瞄准等功能。通常可分为观测仪器和摄影测量仪器两大类，前者是以人眼作为光信息接收器，后者用感光胶片记录景物信息。普通光学仪器主要由光学系统(物镜、转像镜、分划镜、目镜等)、镜筒和精密机械零部件等组成。观察测量仪器的光学系统主要是望远系统，它能放大视角，使人看清远方的景物，便于测量和瞄准。摄影仪器的光学系统主要是照像物镜，为了适应不同的使用要求，发展了大口径、长焦距、变焦距等多种镜头。军用可见光仪器主要有望远镜、炮队镜、方向盘、潜望镜、瞄准镜、测距仪、光学经纬仪、照相机、判读仪等。尽管从20世纪50年代以来，出现了红外、微光、激光等技术先进的光电子仪器，但普通光学仪器具有图像清晰、使用方便和成本较低等优点，仍然是武器系统配套装备的重要组成部分。
