Finite element analysis of head/disk continuous sliding contact was performed to investigate temperature field and thermal stress field due to frictional heat using an axisymmetric thermal model.

In order to develop the critical operating conditions for demagnetization of the disk,a coupled temperature-displacement finite element analysis of a slider sliding contact with a textured disk surface was performed,so as to investigate simultaneously the stress and temperature distributions in the magnetic layer.

Also the stess distribution problem in the half space with gradient layers coating is considered and compared with the homogeneous half space and half space with single layer coating under same sliding contact load and in plastic deformation condition.

It is in this model that the influence of lubricant on stress intensity factors of surface initial fatigue lean crack in rolling/sliding contact has been analyzed through using the collapsed 8 node quadrilateral isoparametric elements and numerical extrapolated method.
