雀形目鹟科画眉亚科的1属。体型较小,体长90～202毫米。嘴形短厚,其厚度较长度为大,或与长度几乎相等；鼻孔完全被羽掩盖；翅短而圆，第一枚初级飞羽的长度超过第二枚之半。翅长不及100毫米。世界共有17种,中国有14种，棕头鸦雀（见图）为本属的常见种，遍布中国北部、东部和南部。头至上背红棕色，上体余部为带黄的橄榄褐色；两翅和尾羽暗褐色，颏、喉和上胸玫瑰棕色；腹部中央皮黄色。常集小群在灌木荆棘间活动。夏季大多活动于山地，冬季迁至山坡多蕨类植物的草地和山麓的芦苇地带，鸣叫嘈杂不休。喜集群作短距离飞行。4～7月间繁殖。巢以纤纸、草茎、竹叶等编织而成，呈杯状，外敷以蛛网、苔藓，内铺茅草等。巢筑于山茶或其他灌木的枝桠间,离地1米左右。每窝产卵4～5枚。主要啄食昆虫。
