中国现代美术史家。1904年10月10日生于江苏省宜兴县。1924年毕业于上海大学美术系。他最初从事美术技法理论的探讨，后专攻中国美术史。曾陆续出版《色彩学》、《室内装饰美术》、《绘画的理论与实际》、《东洋美术史》等，同时对西洋版画也作过多方面的介绍。他从1940年起任金陵大学副教授兼中国文化研究所研究员,1943年任敦煌艺术研究所研究员。在此期间,他曾出版《古画评三种考订》、《敦煌石室画像题识》等著作,后者为敦煌学研究提供了大量资料。同时,他还发表了多篇研究论文。抗日战争胜利后，他任国立艺术专科学校教授。中华人民共和国建立后，他先后兼任中央美术学院华东分院，浙江美术学院图书馆馆长、美术理论教研室副主任等职。自1979年起，史岩对全国各地的石窟群、古遗址、古墓葬以及文物保管单位珍藏的出土文物进行了补充调查和考察，在此基础上他出版了《中国雕塑史图录》（4卷）。近年来又为《中国美术全集》主编《隋唐雕塑》、《五代·宋雕塑》2卷。另外,他多年来还在《文物》、《美术研究》、《新美术》等刊物上发表多篇学术论文。80年代，他还担任了浙江美术学院中国雕塑史专业的博士、硕士研究生的导师。
