      中国明清之际哲学家王夫之的辩证发展观的重要命题。语出《周易·系辞上传》:"在天成象,在地成形,变化见矣","日新之谓盛德,生生之谓易"。意指天地万物都在变化,而变化的内容生生不已、不断创新。历代不少思想家,尤其宋代的周敦颐、张载和程颢、程颐等,对此均有阐发;张载由此形成朴素唯物辩证法的气化观。王夫之发展张载的思想,更明确地把整个自然界及人类社会都看作是"日新之化"的过程,认定阴阳摩荡所引起的事物运动是"不息不滞"、"变化日新"的。在自然界,从天上的日月风雷、地上的江河之水,到人身的爪发肌肉,每日每刻都在变化更新。生命运动大都经历着"胚胎"、"流荡"、"灌注"、"衰减"和"散灭"等5个阶段,前3个是生命体处于生长阶段,后两个是生命体处于衰灭阶段,而在衰灭中又已孕育着"推故而别致其新"的契机。从这个意义上说,"死亦生之大造",旧事物的死亡正是新事物诞生的条件。所以自然界"荣枯相代而弥见其新"。人类社会也是一个由野蛮走向文明的进化过程。人类祖先从"植立之兽"中分化出来,不断地创造文明。就政治、道德原则说,古今殊异,"洪荒无揖让之道,唐虞无吊伐之道,汉唐无今日之道,则今日无他年之道者多矣"。人类社会也在变革中不断更新。
  
  张载把气化区别为"变"和"化"两种形式,"变,言其著","化,言其渐"。王夫之进一步把事物的变化日新概括为两种类型:一是"通而自成","质日代而形如一",即事物的内质虽不断代谢,但外形尚未发生根本质变,这是一种自我更新:一是"变而生彼",即由此物变为彼物,这是一种"谢故以生新"。
  
  王夫之基于"变化日新"的发展观,提出"更新而趋时"的政治理想,认为"道莫盛于趋时",思想不能随时代前进,"守其故物而不能日新",必然枯槁而死;如果能够不断自我更新,"趋时应变",就会富有生命力,"日新而不困"。
  
  王夫之的这些富于进取精神的辩证法思想,对中国近代的哲学启蒙,特别是对谭嗣同的变法维新思想,产生过重大的积极影响。
