意大利物理学家。1745年2月 18日生于意大利的科莫，1827年3月5日卒于同一城市。1769年发表第一篇科学论文，1774年任科莫皇家学校物理学教授，1779年任帕维亚大学物理学教授。1777年，伏特改进起电盘和验电器。1800年3月20日宣布发明伏打电堆,这是最早的直流电源。从此,人类对电的研究从静电发展到流动电(电流)。伏特于1801年获法国拿破仑一世授予的伏特金质奖章、奖金和伯爵衔。1791年被选为伦敦皇家学会会员，1794年获皇家学会科普利奖章。为纪念他，人们将电动势单位取名伏特。
