英国画家。1756年3月4日生于苏格兰的斯托克布里奇，1823年 7月 8日卒于爱丁堡。早孤。曾从一金饰匠学艺，开始画细密画，后转入爱丁堡画家D.马丁画室工作过短时期。1780年与一富裕寡妇结婚，全力从事绘画，1784年在伦敦认识J.雷诺兹，深受其影响。1785年去意大利，1787年回到爱丁堡，在乔治大街建立自己的画室，并成为爱丁堡和苏格兰首屈一指的肖像画家。1815年被选为皇家学院会员。1822年英王乔治四世访问爱丁堡，雷伯恩被授予爵士称号，1823年被任命为苏格兰御用画家。雷伯恩画肖像从不先画素描稿，但却能准确地刻画出人物的性格特点，如《约翰·沃科普》和《格伦加里的斯泰尔·麦克唐奈上校》（均藏爱丁堡国家画廊）。
