美国画家。1738年7月3日生于波士顿，1815年 9月9 日卒于伦敦。1748年他的母亲改嫁给画家P.佩勒姆后，他便随继父学油画与版画。早期还受R.费克、J.格林伍德特别是J.布莱克本的影响。他以画肖像起家，19岁即以此为职业。他学习色彩笔画与细密画，也重视解剖学与艺术理论。1765年画《带松鼠的男孩》，翌年送往伦敦展览时受到好评。1774年革命爆发后去英国，从此专画历史画。1779年被选为皇家美术院院士。他的《查塔姆伯爵之死》（1779～1780，伦敦泰特美术馆）画了贵族院的约50个贵族的肖像。《皮尔逊少校之死》（1782～1783，伦敦泰特美术馆），表现一个带头反击法军的青年军官的牺牲，被认为是其最好的历史画。还有一幅《沃森与鲨鱼》也颇受人欢迎。
