描述BetulaL.桦木属,桦木科,约100种,分布于北美、欧洲和亚洲,从北极圈至亚热带高山地区,我国26种,全国均产,主产东北部、中部至西南部,其乔木种类为我国主要森林植物之一,极喜光,速生,耐寒及耐干旱瘠薄土壤。木材中等硬,纹理密致,可为木箱、家具、胶合板等原料,又供薪炭用;树皮内所含的油名桦皮油,可染革以增加香气。落叶乔木或灌木;冬芽有鳞片;叶互生,有锯齿;花单性同株,无花瓣;雄葇荑花序成于秋季,秃裸,翌春先叶或与叶同时开放;花3朵聚生于每一苞片的腋内;萼1-4齿裂;雄蕊2,有2深裂的花丝;雌葇荑花序生于小枝之顶;花无萼,有3个2室的子房聚生于苞片的腋内,果苞裂片,成熟时革质;小坚果有膜质的翅,顶冠以宿存的花柱,成熟时与苞片一起脱落。
