| 桦木科 Betulaceae 双子叶植物纲金缕梅亚纲的一科。落叶乔木或灌木。单叶，互生，托叶早落。花单性，雌雄同株，雄花序穗状，顶生或侧生，有多数苞鳞；雄花插生于苞鳞腋内，有花被或无；雄蕊2～20；雌花序球果状、穗状、总状或头状，有多数苞鳞（果时称果苞），每一苞鳞腋内有2～3朵雌花；雌花无花被，如有花被则与子房贴生；子房2室或不完全2室。果实为坚果或小坚果具翅 。该科是温带植物区系中的典型科。6属约100种，主要分布于北温带，仅桤木属分布至中美洲和南美洲。中国有6属70余种，各地均有分布，其中虎榛子属为中国特有属。 该科植物有较大的经济价值，尤以桦木属为重要，如白桦、黑桦、糙皮桦、亮叶桦等不但是北温带森林的重要树种和造林树种，而且是优质用材林之一。在树皮和其他组织的异细胞中含大量的丹宁（棓酸、前花青苷和鞣花酸等）。根据花和果的形态结构，本科分为榛族和桦木族2族6属。 |
