核心一边缘模式理论来源于弗里德曼1966年发表的论著，后来缪尔达尔和赫希曼也对这一理论的发展做出了重要贡献。弗里德曼将一定空间地域分为%26ldquo;核心区%26rdquo;和%26ldquo;边缘区%26rdquo; 。弗里德曼提出，发展是通过一个不连续的，但又是逐步累积的创新过程而实现的。而发展通常起源于区域内具有较高相互作用潜力的少量的%26ldquo;变革中心%26rdquo;，创新由这些%26ldquo;中心%26rdquo;向周边潜力较小的区域扩张，周边地区依附于%26ldquo;变革中心%26rdquo;获得发展。这类创新变革中心，被弗里德曼称为%26ldquo;核心区%26rdquo;，而一定空间地域内的其他地区，被称为%26ldquo;边缘区%26rdquo;。
