为有代表性的糖醛酸，为葡萄糖6位上的醇基被羧基置换。d-葡糖醛酸除在尿中以酚类、类固醇的配糖体（d-葡糖醛酸苷）的形态出现外，在动物中以粘多糖的组成糖的形态出现，在植物中则以阿拉伯树胶、半纤维素和皂苷等的组成糖的形态出现。另也常以细菌分泌的荚膜多糖出现。在细胞内。经nad+的特异的脱氢酶的作用，由udp-葡萄糖生成udp葡糖醛酸，成为配糖体和多糖的葡糖醛酸残基的供体。另一方面，与葡糖醛酸有关的对葡糖醛酸苷键水解的酶（β-葡糖醛酸苷酶glucuronidase）也有广泛的分布。在细菌中，尚有从6-磷酸葡糖经过肌醇形成游离的葡糖醛酸的途径。多数植物和动物，存在着将游离的d-葡糖醛酸还原成l-古洛糖酸（l-gulonicacid）的酶，这是维生素c的合成途径。
