教育电视是在70年代香港政府推行的一种「教育工具」，目的是借助电视的普及化和受欢迎，使一般的学童可以更容易吸收学科上的知识。早期教育电视的课程内容，一般由小学三年级至中学三年级（根据香港的学制），因為当时小学的常识科并不存在，而是分成「社会科、健康教育科、自然科（或称為科学）」这三个「次要」学科，所以小学三至六年级的教育电视课程，就共有六个科目了（因為除了上述三个科目外，还有中文、英文、数学），每个科目、每星期的主题也会更新一次，片长约十五分鐘；而中学一至三年级的教育电视课程，比小学的就少了一个健康教育科，因此有五个科目，而社会科就包括了「经济与公共事务」、歷史和地理三个科目的内容，中学的课程主题会每两星期更新一次，片长约二十分鐘。
因為教育电视的目的，就是要让学童在电视中学习，所以有时会以轻鬆的手法，去说出课程的重点和带出讯息，特别是社会科和小学的健康教育科，有很多片段往往令人印象深刻。因為这就是70年代至80年代，香港那种封闭的教学方式中，课堂上唯一的娱乐。
