法国作家、哲学家。原名埃米尔·奥古斯特·沙蒂耶，以阿兰的笔名闻于世。1892年起在外省中学任教，1909年秋任巴黎亨利四世中学高级班教授,1933年退休。1903年开始在《鲁昂快报》发表《漫谈》。作者自称用笔杆支持左翼党派的政策。《漫谈》内容广博,天文地理,草木虫鱼,政治经济等无所不谈。文字锋利,形象鲜明。他认为人的思想的大敌:一是热情,热情是感觉的混乱；二是想象，想象是思想的游移。思想要镌刻在一种顽强不驯的材料上，例如大理石、韵律、文字；造成雕像，谱成乐章，写成诗篇或文章。这就要求人具有理性、意志和专业知识。
