    物理学的重要定律之一。它表明任何物质系统(或称质点系 )不受外力或合外力为零时 ,系统的总动量保持不变。由于动量是矢量,系统的总动量应是系统内各物体(或各质点)的动量的矢量和。系统内的力不论是保守力(如重力或弹性力)或耗散力(如摩擦力)都大小相等、方向相反,产生的动量增量也大小相等、方向相反(见动量定理),其和为零,即不影响系统的总动量。在短暂过程如重锤对桩的撞击过程中,系统外的力如地对桩的磨擦力和锤、桩所受的重力,远比因撞击引起的冲力为小,对系统(锤和桩)的总动量的影响可以忽略不计 , 仍可近似地视为外力为零的系统。在高速的亚原子粒子系统中,不能用经典的动量概念来描述物体的运动状态及其变化时,动量守恒定律仍成立,表明它比牛顿运动定律更深刻地反映物质运动的本质。它是和窨平移对称性相关联的(见对称性和守恒定律)。
