质点系不受外力作用或所受全部外力对某定点或定轴的主矩始终等于零时，则质点系对该点或该轴的动量矩（即角动量）保持不变，又称角动量守恒。例如，一圆盘可绕通过其中心与盘面垂直的轴转动，若人站在静止圆盘的边缘顺时针方向沿周边走动，圆盘就会沿反时针方向转动，使两者角动量之和为零，保持和原来两者都静止时的值一样。又如喷气轮机可逆气流的方向转动。角动量守恒的数学表达式可由动量矩定理在外力矩等于零的情况下导出。
