短姑道头
进了佛国山门，往东南约30米处，便是短姑道头。此地旧时原为海滩，滩上有“阔十余米，长百来米，小石自相零附，两侧错列巨细不一形状各异的岩石”，有些石上镌有“短姑古迹”等字样， 出没于潮汐浪涛之中，成为旧时的天然船埠。船到短姑道头边，可是靠不了岸，还得用长不过一丈、宽不过三尺的小舢板摆渡。清光绪三十一年（1905），普陀山住持了余、莲禅二僧因潮落潮涨，往来船只靠岸不便，遂募资用巨石垒成长达11米，宽8米的石条道头。在未建普陀山客运码头之前，凡前来普陀山参札进香、揽胜观光者，都得由此登岸。现今虽然有了客运码头，但游仍绵恋着这个人普陀名山的第一处胜境。
相传有姑嫂俩发愿礼佛，几年后凑资买船，渡莲洋朝山进香，船刚泊道头，不巧小姑“天癸”来潮，自愧不洁，不敢下船入山。其嫂短其无福朝圣，遂嘱其在小舟中候她，独自怅然进山拜佛去了。不想时近晌午，潮水大涨，小舟与岸相隔，小姑久坐船中，饥不得食，甚为纳闷。正在此时，只见一村妇模样的，持食盒至岸，边向潮水里投下一些石块，边踩着这些石块径直来到小姑舟中，说是她嫂托她捎来的，放下食盒，便离船而去。过了不久，其嫂进香归来，问及前事，嫂愕然；忽然记起刚才拜佛时，瞻仰莲座，只见观音大士衣据湿着一片，心里顿有所悟，以为这是观世音菩萨所为，忙不迭又进山到观音面前叩拜会了。因其嫂曾在码头“短其姑”，从此，姑嫂泊舟处即被称作‘短姑道头”。道头旁自相零附出没于潮水中的石块，传说是大士送食时投向潮水里用以跺脚的石块，遂被称作‘短姑圣迹”。
