专性厌氧，在有氧的情况下不能生长，必须在无游离氧环境中才能生长的细菌。目前已知厌氧菌分为31个属，245个种和亚种，大致可分为革兰阳性芽胞杆菌、革兰阳性无芽胞杆菌、革兰阴性无芽胞杆菌和球菌(包括革兰阳性和阴性）四大类。凡临床上有炎症、脓疡或组织坏死等表现、分泌物有臭味者，多呈慢性顽固的感染过程，常用抗生素治疗无效，渗出物涂片有细菌而常规培养阴性者，均应考虑可能为厌氧菌感染，进行厌氧培养检查，以求确诊。
