按照每册教科书的内容编写的辅导教师教学的用书。中国实行近代学制以后，为各门学科编辑了教科书，同时还编辑了每册教科书的教学指导书。早期的教学指导书称为教授书,后来因教授一词改称"教学",教授书便改称教学指导书。它按照教科书的课文说明教学目的、课文的重点和难点、指导预习的提示、应准备的教具、实验和实习作业的指导、对优等生的补充习题、对后进生的辅导要点以及供教师参考的注释、说明、题解和教师进修读物的索引等有关资料。为了提倡教师发挥教学的创造性，不受教学指导书的约束，现在称为教学参考书。
