室韦 中国古代民族。又作失韦、失围。东胡后裔。5~10世纪主要活动在今嫩江、绰尔河、额尔古纳河、黑龙江流域。北魏时,室韦各部开始与中原王朝通贡。后臣服突厥。隋代分为五大部:南室韦、北室韦、钵室韦、深末室韦、大室韦。南室韦有粗放农耕和畜养;北室韦以渔猎为主,曾向隋朝贡。唐代,部落衍生,各部不断向唐朝贡,接受官封。中唐以后,文献中曾将室韦称作鞑靼 。840年,黠戛斯驱逐回鹘西迁,室韦-鞑靼人成批进入漠北,使这片原是操突厥语诸族游牧的地域逐渐蒙古化。8~9世纪,望建河(今额尔古纳河)畔有蒙兀室韦。“蒙兀”是蒙古一称在历史文献中的最早记载。契丹建辽后,室韦被征服。辽、金称室韦-鞑靼为阻卜。有学者认为室韦是蒙古族的先民。
