表征物质对辐射的吸收能力强弱的一种量。某种物质不透明度大，就是指该物质对辐射的吸收能力强，通常也就说这种物质对辐射是不透明的。为了定量地描述物质的不透明度，习惯上采用的是吸收系数（见恒星大气的吸收和散射），一般还采用对频率作某种加权平均所得到的平均吸收系数（见辐射转移理论）作为不透明度的量度。物质的不透明度可以由多种元过程引起，在不同物理条件下起主要作用的元过程是不同的。在恒星内部，温度可高达百万度，原子大部分已高度电离，自由电子也比较丰富，那里的不透明度主要由金属离子的K层、L层、M层等内层电子的光致电离和自由-自由跃迁，以及自由电子散射来确定。此外，对于电磁波谱的不同波段,例如射电、红外线、可见光、X射线和γ射线等波段，不透明度应由对应波段所特有的吸收机制来确定。
