味知即舌根也。谓憍梵钵提，于过去世，轻弄沙门，有牛呞（音诗）病。佛为遮谤，赐之数珠，令常念佛，清净心地。又观舌根，知味之性，非体非物，应念得超世间诸漏，悟入圆通。故云还味旋知，斯为第一。（梵语憍梵钵提，华言牛呞，以其宿世曾作牛王，余习未除，故食后常虚噍也。梵语沙门，华言勤息。还味旋知者，谓不着尘味，不随妄知也。）
