英国继迅速级之后建造了7艘特拉法加级潜艇。特拉法加级较先前的迅速级拥有较短、较胖的舰体，以及较短的帆罩，如此可减少潜望镜深度。舰身上并覆盖有新型的吸音瓦。由于特拉法加级较迅速级晚了六年，故得以在侦测及电子系统上有显著的进步，并且结合了最先进的静音技术，因而成为世界上最安静的核动力攻击潜艇。
另外推进系统也是其努力改进的项目之一，反应炉心的寿命较以往的核动力潜艇皆长。为达到静音效果，特拉法加级装置机械的筏式平台悬于引擎舱的边缘各处，并以喷射帮浦取代了传统的推进器，如此亦可减低一些噪音，不过采用这些改良后的设计偶尔也会遭到一些问题，而圆锥形舰尾所提供的额外浮力可承受这些增加的重量。特拉法加号建造时，喷射帮浦尚在进行测试中，因此特拉法加号只好使用传统推进器，不过其后各舰皆采用了喷射帮浦。此外，各舰舰体皆装置了吸音瓦，以求更进一步降低噪音。
