【来源】
为禾本科植物白茅的花穗。植物形态详"白茅根"条。
【采集】
4～5月花盛开前采收。摘下带茎的花穗，晒干。
【药材】
干燥的花穗，呈圆柱形，长5～20厘米，小穗基部和颖片密被细长丝状毛，占花穗的绝大部分，灰白色，质轻而柔软，若棉絮状。小穗黄褐色，介于细长丝状毛中，不易脱落，外颖矩圆状披针形，膜质；雌蕊花柱2裂，裂片线形，裂片上着生黄棕色毛。花序柄圆柱形，青绿色。气微，味淡。以干燥、洁白、无叶、柄短者为佳。 主产江苏、浙江。其他各地亦有。
【药理作用】
家兔每日口服水煎剂0.5克／公斤，共服3天，服药的第5天起，凝血和出血时间均较对照组缩短。作用可维持数天。并能降低血管通透性(台盼兰渗透试验)。
【性味】
①《唐本草》："味甘，温，无毒。" ②《履巉岩本草》："性暖，无毒。"
【功用主治】
止血，定痛。治吐血，衄血，刀伤。 ①《唐本草》："主衄血，吐血，灸疮。" ②《日华子本草》："罯刀箭疮，止血并痛。"
【用法与用量】
内服：煎汤，3～5钱。外用：罨敷或塞鼻。
【选方】
治鼻衄：白茅花五钱，猪鼻一个。同炖约一小时，饭后服，服多次，可望根治。(《泉州本草》)
