叔,别署龙湫院行者。江苏长洲（今苏州）人。入县学后，屡试不第，曾为幕僚。咸丰七年(1857)纳赀入仕，官浙江候补县丞。一生郁郁不得志，倾其全力作诗,病卒杭州,遗命自拟碑碣：“清故诗人江叔之墓”。江
的诗，大半是描写景物和自道身世之作，境多抑塞凄苦，自云：“平生参遍名家作，似为今时写此哀；写出浑疑哀已尽，明朝又上笔端来。”（《录近诗因书四绝》之一）也有少数诗作，如《流民》等，述及民间疾苦。其诗工力深厚，擅长白描，戛戛独造，造意遣词，力脱常径，自言其诗“脱略前人”，“意匠已成新架屋，心花那傍旧枝开”（《近年》），很为时人推重。近代陈衍称他是“咸、同间一诗雄”，“寻常命笔，每首必有一二语可味者”（《近代诗钞》）。近代金天翮说他“以清刚矫浓
”，“曲折洞达，写难状之隐，如听话言”（《答苏戡先生书》）。李慈铭也说他的诗“有劲气”。诗以外，江还兼长书法，善画山水花草。著有《伏
