      平面上一动直线沿固定圆作纯滚动时,此直线上任意点的轨迹为该圆的渐开线(见图)。这一动直线BK称为发生线,固定圆O1称为基圆。K 的轨迹A1K为O1的渐开线。基圆越大,渐开线在相同压力角αK的某点K处的曲率半径也越大,如B2K大于B1K。当基圆趋于无穷大时,BK趋于无穷大,渐开线亦趋于直线AK。基圆内无渐开线。渐开线常用于齿轮轮齿的工作齿廓和花键工作齿廓。
