能使直线往复运动与旋转运动相互转换的轴。在往复活塞式发动机中,得到动力并作往复运动的活塞,通过连杆使曲轴作旋转运动以输出动力。在往复式的空气压缩机和水泵等工作机中,动力机的旋转主轴则通过曲轴和连杆带动活塞做直线往复运动。曲轴由主轴颈、曲柄销、曲柄臂和轴身等部分组成(见图)。主轴颈在固定于机座的轴承中旋转,为曲轴支承部分。曲柄销在连杆大端的轴承中旋转,是曲轴与连杆的铰接部分。曲柄臂是主轴颈与曲柄销或两相邻曲柄销的联接部分。曲柄臂和曲柄销合称曲拐。单缸发动机和冲床等工作机多采用单拐曲轴,多缸发动机和空气压缩机多采用多拐曲轴。曲拐越多,曲轴能传递的动力越大,工作越平稳。曲轴可以铸造或锻造。铸造的曲轴材料利用合理,成本低廉。其中铸铁曲轴多用球墨铸铁或合金铸铁浇铸。铸钢曲轴具有较高的机械性能。锻造曲轴一般用碳钢或合金钢锻制。大型曲轴常由几部分拼装而成,称为组合曲轴。
