清代喀尔喀蒙古地区最大的藏传佛教格鲁派(黄教)活佛。17世纪初,西藏佛教觉南派(Jonang-pa)僧人多罗那他(T╣ran╣tha)受请前往喀尔喀部传教近二十年,常驻库伦（今蒙古乌兰巴托），深得喀尔喀部统治阶级的信奉和支持,被尊为哲布尊丹巴(Rje-btsun-dam-pa),意为圣贤尊者。明崇祯七年(1634)多罗那他圆寂。 次年, 喀尔喀部土谢图汗衮布多尔济生次子札那巴札尔，喀尔喀部遂认定是多罗那他转世, 即哲布尊丹巴一世 (1635～1723)。清顺治六年(1649)哲布尊丹巴一世进藏学经,达赖五世迫令他改宗黄教，授给他 "哲布尊丹巴呼图克图"(呼图克图，意为长生不老之人)的尊号。从此哲布尊丹巴活佛系统由觉南派改属黄教。康熙二十七年(1688)准噶尔部进攻喀尔喀部，哲布尊丹巴一世劝说喀尔喀部归顺清朝。乾隆以后,其转世须经由清廷主持的金瓶掣签确定。1911年哲布尊丹巴八世在沙俄怂恿下宣布"独立",成立"外蒙古自治政府", 称"大蒙古皇帝"。1919年11月撤销自治。1921年3月白俄军据库伦,拥哲布尊丹巴八世复辟。7月，蒙古人民革命党于库伦成立革命政府,以哲布尊丹巴八世为立宪君主。1924年3月哲布尊丹巴八世圆寂于库伦。11月蒙古取消君主政体，成立人民共和国。
