亚区，旧热带区，地理，撒哈拉沙漠，种类，哺乳类，有蹄类，鸟类，西非，南非
在北界中属于旧热带区动物地理亚区之一，包括撒哈拉沙漠以南（阿特拉斯山脉以南也在内）的整个非洲大陆。哺乳类中固有种占2／3，有蹄类中的长颈鹿、河马；灵长类的黑猩猩、大猩猩；食肉类的狮子为著名的特产种。鸟类固有种占3／5，除最有名的鸵鸟外，尚有秃鹫、食蛇鹫、苍鹰等许多食肉鸟类。锦蛇、避役、鳄等爬行类也很多，也是其特色之一。此外还有非洲肺鱼（protopterus）等肺鱼类。本亚区可进一步分为西非地区（地方）（west africanprovince）和南非地区（地方）（south africanprovince）。a．r．wallace等把本地区作为埃塞俄比亚区，但因与东洋亚区（wallace的东洋区）有很多共有的或近缘的种类，所以把两者合并成为旧热带区，而把这两者各作为其中的一个亚区。
