林跳鼠科是分布于北方大陆的一个小科，其中北美洲和欧亚大陆各有2属。林跳鼠科成员的后肢虽然长于前肢，但是远不及跳鼠科的后肢长。有些种类后肢仅略比前肢长，耳朵比跳鼠短而圆，外形略似典型的鼠类，尾巴长但尾端无跳鼠那样的尾穗。林跳鼠科成员生活于森林、沼泽和开阔地带，食果实、种子和昆虫，其食物构成因种类而异。四川林跳鼠不仅是我国特有的种，也是我国特有的属，分布于我国西部自甘肃到云南之间，数量非常稀少。
