中国特产种，仅限于台湾山地，已被列为国家I级重点保护动物。《中国濒危动物红皮书·鸟类》中被列为未定种；《世界自然保护联盟》1994年列为易危种。
别名：蓝腹鹇。全长约80cm。体形似白鹇，但尾较短。羽冠与背白，上体余部及下体大都黑而闪蓝。肩红，翅上覆羽黑色，羽端带绿。尾羽除中央一对为白色外，亦黑而蓝。嘴和距淡角色。脸色深红。额上肉冠及脸部肉垂亦深红。脚猩红色。
栖息于海拔300～2200m山区原始阔叶林及混交林底层腐植质的缓坡地带，偶尔见于次生林或人工林。性机警、隐秘、怕人，多于黎明或薄暮出来活动。夜间在低树干上栖宿。鸣声低沉混浊，似“咯、咯”声。食物为草莓和植物的幼芽、嫩叶、根及草中的昆虫、蚯蚓等。
