清代以后,青铜编钟的研究与制作应用进入了一个新的历史时期,根据大量的文献资料,将其划分为3个阶段:20世纪50年代以前为第1阶段,关于青铜编钟的研究开始跳出旧式金石学的范畴;20世纪50年代-80年代中后期为第2阶段,青铜编钟的相关研究逐渐拓展开来,尤其是1978年曾侯乙编钟出土之后,以曾侯乙编钟研究和复制为中心所开展的工作,澄清了长期以来人们关于青铜编钟的一些模糊认识,将青铜编钟研究的领域大大拓宽,为青铜编钟的制作和广泛应用提供了技术上的支持;20世纪80年代中后期以来为第3阶段,随着青铜编钟考古实物的不断增加,对青铜编钟的研究更加全面和深入,青铜编钟的制作与应用也逐渐兴起。
