受热后能显示出清晰颜色的成像材料，是将染料隐色体和显色剂一起分散在水溶性或油溶性粘合剂中，再涂于支持体上而成。所用的染料隐色体为内酯结构或三芳基甲烷染料，如结晶紫内酯、孔雀绿内酯和无色母体结晶紫及20世纪70年代发展的荧烷染料等。显色剂为双酚A等，受热后，显色剂释放出氢质子,使染料内酯环断裂或形成醌式结构而显出颜色。热敏成像材料通常用于心电图仪、台式电子计算机或电传真等的记录纸。
