外交政策研究所是美国著名“冷战”思想库之一，规模不大，却颇重要，它主要得到美国东部和中西部财团，尤其是费城财团的支持。它持保守立场，得到里根的赏识，曾在里根政府今后制定对外政策中，该所的主张有一定的影响。
