| 洪湖 位于中国湖北省江汉平原的南端，跨洪湖和监利两县。洪湖形成于1465～1521年，是在长江和东荆江之间的洼地上发育起来的河间凹地湖。南北长约44.6千米，东西宽约28千米，湖面积402平方千米，是湖北最大的淡水湖。容积7.5亿立方米。湖的东面和西面通长江，北面接东荆河。洪湖水面开阔，港汊交错，湖底平坦，淤泥深厚，过去每当汛期到来，江河倒流入湖，湖水漫流，到处一片汪洋，是一个水患频繁的地方。中华人民共和国建立后，经过修筑湖堤，开挖排水渠道，建造电力排水站等各种水利工程措施，为湖区的经济发展和湖水养殖业创造了优良的条件。河湖性鱼类有74种，水生植物以莲藕、菱角、芡实为大宗。水禽有近40种。
