    西方通俗文学的样式,属于惊险神秘小说的范畴。主要
写具有惊人的推理、判断能力的人物  ,根据一系列的线索,解破犯罪的疑案。其结构、情节、人物甚至环境都有一定的格局和程式,因此也是一种程式文学。由于传统侦探小说中的破案方式大多是推理,所以又称推理小说。19世纪中叶开始发展,美国E.A.坡,被认为是西方侦探小说的鼻祖。早期最有影响的侦探小说是英国柯南道尔的《福尔摩斯侦探故事》。它带动侦探小说迅速在西方兴起,并在20世纪上半叶进入黄金时代,代表人物为美国的艾勒里·奎恩和英国的阿加莎·克里斯蒂。20世纪20年代末期,美国出现了一种反传统的硬汉派侦探小说,代表人物有达希尔·哈梅特和雷蒙德·钱德勒。第二次世界大战后,侦探小说在各国仍十分流行。
