中国最早的边疆和域外地理专篇。西汉学者司马迁所著《史记》中的一篇，根据西汉张骞出使西域的汇报写成的。大宛为汉代西域地名，在今苏联中亚的费尔干纳盆地一带。张骞在第一次出使时，曾以大宛为活动中心，其汇报各地的位置与距离也都以大宛为准，故用大宛为篇名。列传所记亦以大宛为中心，旁及周围一些国家、部落,远至今西亚南部、南亚一些地方,也涉及中国新疆和川、滇部分地区。叙述这些地区的地理和历史情况，包括位置、距离、四邻、农牧业、物产、人口、兵力与城邑等。言简意赅，不仅叙述了开辟"丝绸之路"的艰苦历程，并且反映出中国古代人民地理知识与视野的不断扩大，是研究中国地理学史和中亚等地历史地理的重要文献。
