日本遗传学家、蚕遗传学奠基人之一。1884年10月6日生于长野县。1972年 7月1日去世。1909年毕业于东北帝国大学农科大学农学科,留校任助教、副教授。1913年在日本最早讲授遗传学，以有关蚕的遗传学和柞蚕与环境的研究，先后获得农学博士和理学博士学位。1919～1922年赴欧美研究，回国后任九州帝国大学农学院副教授、教授、学部长。他是日本育种学会和日本遗传学会的创建人之一,曾任日本遗传学会会长,基因命名法国际委员会委员长。1945年退休后任九州帝国大学名誉教授、福冈县农业专门学校校长、国立遗传学研究所第一部长，并被选为日本学士院会员。毕生从事蚕的遗传学研究和教育工作，发现桑蚕性染色体基因联锁因雌雄而异。其研究范围还涉及有关人类遗传的优生学领域。主要著作有《蚕的遗传和品种改良》、《蚕的遗传讲话》、《遗传学》、《蚕学》、《家蚕遗传学》和《基础遗传学》等19种。
