在划分行当的表演体制中戏曲演员的分工规制。戏曲表演有严格的分行，生、旦、净、丑各个行当都包容着一批人物形象，在表演上各具特色，某一剧目的某一人物应由哪个行当的演员扮演，皆有相应的规定。通常把扮演演员本人所属行当中的戏剧人物叫"本工"，如扮演《空城计》的诸葛亮是老生演员的本工，扮演《挑滑（华）车》的高宠是长靠武生演员的本工等，各行脚色都有自己的本工戏。不属本工的范围，但向例必须兼扮的，叫"应工"，如昆曲《铁冠图》的王承恩由老旦演员兼扮,儿童和门子由贴旦演员兼扮等,都属应工。同一剧目的同一人物可由两个不同行当扮演的，叫"两门抱"，如昆曲《荆钗记》的王十朋母和京剧《清风亭》的贺氏,可由老旦演员扮,也可由丑脚演员扮。京剧《四进士》的万氏原有两种演法：一为俊扮，属花旦型，由花旦演员扮；一为丑扮，属彩旦型，由丑脚演员扮。此外，扮演同演员所属行当的表演特点距离较远的戏剧人物时，称"反串"，如《铁弓缘》的陈秀英在女扮男装后，即为反串小生和武生。近代，有些京剧演员的技艺全面，戏路宽广，昆曲、乱弹、文戏和武戏中的许多人物皆能扮演的，人称"文武昆乱不挡"。
