后来的封建统治者和持儒家伦理思想的人，也曾提倡礼、义，主张廉、耻，却没有将其并列而作为治国之纲。蒋介石曾以"立国救民"之名，竭力鼓吹"礼义廉耻，国之四维"，并赋予它以"规规矩矩"、"合乎国家的纪律"等所谓"新义"，作为其"新生活运动"的"标的"和"中心"。
