植物培养在含硝酸钠的溶液中时，植物对硝酸根离子的吸收要比对钠离子的吸收多。由于在吸收环境中no3-的同时，根细胞必定有相同电荷的与之交换，所以环境溶液中浓度增加，并形成了碳酸氢钠，溶液ph上升，呈碱性。植物生理学者把这一类能使土壤碱化的盐称为生理碱性盐。在农业生产上，切忌长期单独使用某一生理酸性盐或生理碱性盐，以防止土壤酸化或碱化。
