台湾糖业中心，云林县属镇。位于台湾本岛西中部，在北港溪下游右岸，西距海岸、东距山麓地带均约16公里。人口约5.4万。 清代曾为台湾西部主要港口之一。明末清初大陆移民至台垦荒的重要登岸地区，相传颜思齐、郑芝龙等集团入台经营,即由此地开始,并由此进至今嘉义市一带。北港溪源自东部山麓区，西下平原，在北港一带河道迂回特甚，沉积旺盛，河口滩涂发育迅速。清以来,海岸线西移日远。北港溪上游本无通航之便,下游亦早因淤浅不可通航，北港遂徒留港名，实无航运之利。有清初自福建移香而创建的妈祖庙（天后宫），为台岛200多个妈祖庙中建立最早、规模最大的一座,每年神诞，庙会盛况为他处所不及。现代制糖业兴起后，北港糖业外销产品由专用铁路运集纵贯铁路，南下高雄港出口。有省第19号公路干线自彰化经此至台南市。
