绕恒星旋转的稀薄气体环。气环同气盘并无严格的区别，只是前者在可见光波段上比较透明而已。二十世纪六十年代以来，在双星研究方面比较注意对气环的观测和研究。双星中存在气环的主要观测事实是：光谱中出现某些元素的发射线，在接近食前和食后不久的时间内，相继发生红移和紫移的现象（见谱线位移）。早在1942年，乔伊即根据金牛座RW光谱中发射线在食的过程中的变化，首次发现了双星有气环存在。迄今发现有气环的双星，多为大陵五型半相接双星(见密近双星)。双星气环的成因，一般认为是：当一子星充满临界等位面并向另一子星抛射物质流时，若气流角动量密度高于吸积物质的子星的角动量密度，就可能形成围绕子星旋转的气环。因此，中心星应是质量较大的子星，且中心星与自身的临界等位面之间要有可以容纳气环存在的足够宽阔的空间。但在一系列包含致密星的X射线双星中,吸积盘却是围绕小质量致密子星旋转的。它的形成，可能是气流内粒子碰撞的结果。至于 B型发射星中的气环或气盘，则可能是由中心星赤道物质抛射而形成的。气环在双星动力学演化中，起着角动量贮存库的作用，它的不稳定性，往往引起双星轨道运动和子星自转运动的波动现象。这在双星观测和理论研究中占有重要的地位。
