天龙山有东、西两峰，东峰叫“仙岩山”，西峰称“大佛山”，双峰对峙，风采独具。在两峰南坡的山腰间，开凿25个石窟，即东峰12个窟，西峰13个窟，除第11窟面东外，都是坐北向南。石窟排列有序，形制各异，大小不一。计有造像 500余尊，浮雕、藻井、画像1144尊（幅）。它以精炼、细腻而又富有感情的特殊艺术而闻名于世，在中国十大石窟中据说排名为第六位，可惜后来被盗，至今仍有 150余件作品流落海外。
