基于量子力学求能谱的理论和液HeⅡ的特性，费因曼给出激发态的波函数，从而推算出与朗道（Landau）唯象理论所给的液4He的元激发谱。他将激发态的声子波函数写成

这里$\varphi=\varphi(bb{R}_1,bb{R}_2,\ldots,bb{R}_N,)$是HeⅡ系统N个氦原子坐标Ri(i=1,2,…,N)有关的基态波函数，但由于氦原子的流动性而不能重叠，原子靠得太近时的组态$varphi$应等于零，互相分开的位形中$varphi$应有极大值，但$varphi$无波节。用上列波函数计算给出的能谱，在较低能声子谱段与实验符合，较高能段给出的能隙Δ比实验值高出约2倍。1956年他和Cohen提出改进的波函数：
